Abstract

Background: Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIO) have been used as a tracer for SLN localization in breast cancer, demonstrating comparable performance to the combination of radioisotope and blue dye (RI±BD) with occasional skin staining as an adverse effect. SPIO has been tested in different doses, injection site and timing and shows the potential for delayed SLN dissection (SLND) after previous breast excision for DCIS. A systematic review and meta-analysis were undertaken to summarize evidence, assess technique evolution and define knowledge gaps.
