Abstract
Abstract Culture possesses the potential to improve the human condition and transform the world system. Clarification of the nature and meaning of culture is essential for this. Historical approach reveals that there has been a relentless trend throughout history towards a holistic and egalitarian concept of culture. Projected to its next logical stage, culture may be viewed cosmologically as the way in which species in general and the human species in particular perceive the world and act in the world. All species and nature are locked in an inexorable and symbiotic relationship. Treating culture as a distinct discipline could open the doors to a greatly expanded role for culture as the centerpiece of the world system in the future, particularly as it relates to the development of more holistic and egalitarian world‐views, more accurate and authentic interpretations of history, more enlightened values and value systems, and elaboration of culture's wisest and most enduring qualities.
