Abstract

Anyone in a data-driven job like security, fraud, business intelligence, performance monitoring or any other data-dependant field will have heard about the latest phenomenon of ‘big data’. This exciting technological breakthrough promises to make business more efficient, identify anything that might harm it well ahead of time, and predict the future with pinpoint accuracy. One of the most obvious commercial applications of this has been the use of SIEM tools. However, as Jon Inns of Accumuli explains, to return real value, SIEM systems need to be used with care and an understanding of what it is you're looking for and trying to achieve – and they need to be tuned to the task in hand.
