Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to offer an explanation for the Evershed Effect which was first observed by Evershed at Kodaikanal Observatory in India in 1909, and has remained unexplained ever since. Evershed observed that gas flows outwards from sunspots at velocities of between 1 and 2 km./sec. Until recently all observers likewise found similar velocities, which the writer found surprising, as on his electrical discharge theory of cosmic atmospheric phenomena ( Ia) 2 2 The boldface numbers in parentheses refer to the references appended to this paper. he had expected that these velocities would reach about 7 km./sec.
