Abstract

The validity, precision and practicability of two quantal and three quantitative methods of evaluating the immune responses of guinea pigs to diphtheria toxoids are compared. Of the five methods examined, a method based upon the use of multiple intradermal challenges provides as much statistical weight per animal as can be obtained from serum antitoxin titres but avoids the need for serum titrations. The statistical weight per animal of assays based on multiple intradermal challenges is generally twice that of assays based on subcutaneous challenge.
