Abstract

To evaluate lateral order distribution in native cellulose, fractional dissolution method by the emulsion xanthation was applied with varying concentrations of sodium hydroxide solution. From some preliminary experiments the following conditions were found to be suitable for the purpose. Fifty ml of sodium hydroxide solution and 1.0ml of carbon disulfide are added to 0.5g methanolyzed cellulose sample, and treated for 6 hours at 20_??_25°C. The undissolved residue was washed with sodium hydroxide solution of same concentration as used in emulsion xanthation.Lateral order distribution curves obtained by this method agree fairly well with that of the fractional dissolution method proposed by T. Yurugi and H. Maeda.
