Abstract

The percutaneous placement of an Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) for acute cardiogenic shock and post cardiotomy support has become a standard practice in many centers. The complication rate of these devices has widely been reported. We reviewed in-hospital complication rate and found overall complication rates are 10%. Major Complications occurred 4.7% of the time including limb ischemia, bleeding and balloon rupture. Minor complications occurred 5.7% of the time and included limb ischemia, local bleeding and catheter dysfunction.
