Abstract

In experimental cough induced by citric acid inhalation, 29 mg. (20 drops) “Detigon” caused 55 per cent. inhibition after one hour, compared with 18 per cent. produced by codeine gr. ⅙. The distinction two and a half hours after administration was less marked but still statistically significant. A clinical trial in 239 patients showed that 29 mg. “Detigon” had an effect equivalent to gr. ⅓ codcine, which is larger than the usual dose used in antitussive mixtures. The side effects recorded were similar in both groups, but the method of asking direct questions undoubtedly increased the percentage of patients complaining. It therefore appears that in the dosage recommended for adults (15 to 20 drops four times a day) “Detigon” is a highly effective cough suppressant, and is presented in a form which will allow patients to carry the medicament in the pocket inconspicuously. Antitussive action was recorded in approximately 80 per cent. of all patients with a cough; this action was pronounced in 50 per cent. The residual action from the evening dose (taken at 8 p.m.) allowed a complete night's rest in 70 per cent. and sleep until about 2 a.m. in a further 17 per cent.
