Abstract
Penni Cotton is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at Kingston University, U.K., where she teaches children's literature and literacy education. Her main research interests focus on visual narratives as stimuli for creating cultural awareness, and she received a grant from the European Commission in order to develop these further. The resultant European Picture Book Collection (EPBC) is discussed in this article. Her Ph.D. thesis presented a semiotic text analysis of the visual narratives within the EPBC and is to be published by Trentham Books in January 2000, entitled Picture Books Sans Frontieres.
