Abstract
The Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO) was founded in the aftermath of the break-up of the former Soviet Union into independent states. The rationale for its formation and the history of that formation are described, along with statistical information on filings, grants and maintenance over the first five years of operation. Some 4000 applications have been filed, in part through national offices and directly at the EAPO, but mainly through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) route. Documentation available to EAPO examiners, as well as training provided for examiners in the EAPO and in the corresponding national offices are also outlined.
