Abstract

Ethology and psychiatry are separate disciplines that deal with a common subject— behavior—each according to its own orientation. The collection of articles in this special supplementary issue represents the current state of interaction between the two disciplines. Ethology and its outgrowth, sociobiology, offer psychiatry an alternative and yet to be fully explored perspective with which to understand psychiatric populations. Psychiatry offers ethology and sociobiology challenging populations upon which ethological and sociobiological theories and methods can be tested. The contributors to this special supplementary issue hope that the series of articles stimulates more interaction between the two disciplines.
