The Ethical Basis of Economic Freedom

Abstract

In the Shattuck Lecture for 1974, Elliot Richardson reviewed the ills of bureaucratization and industrialization in American medical care and insisted that more responsible conduct in the private sectors would be essential if Americans were to set reasonable limits on further governmental involvement. This book explores some of the issues involved in establishing that conduct. With financial assistance from the American Medical Association, this book was published by an educational corporation concerned with the loss of economic and political freedom in the United States. Reflecting the experiences of numerous professional and business groups, 21 persons contributed essays about political freedom, economic policy, and ethical judgment. Reprinted with critical commentaries are the codes of ethics of various professional groups such as chiefs of police, American football coaches, realtors, newspaper editors, broadcasters, and others.
