Abstract

The Ethernet Packet Proxy (EPPRO) is a dedicated network protocol and software suit for data acquisition with a compact system on Linux machines. Together with other Ethernet protocols like the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) or even the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) it utilizes the IEEE standard Ethernet frames for the data transmission, but the EPPRO has been optimised for point to point connections with the highest possible payload. Moreover it supports the packet prioritization and well optimised data storage mechanisms. Its implementation in hardware is streamlined because most of the tasks have been moved to the PC software. The system has been successfully implemented and its throughput and reliability measured.
