Abstract

SERS intensities of both the O-H stretching band in water molecules and the Ag 0-Cl − SERS band are increased by a factor of about two when ethanol is added to form a SERS solution of 0.71 M KCl-ethanol (1.0)-water (2.8). This ethanol effect was also observed in the deuterated water system for the O-D stretching SERS band. Two possibilities are speculated for the ethanol effects: hydrogen-bond breaking (and thus enhanced surface adsorption) of water molecules, and stabilization of a surface adatomic complex such as Ag 0-Cl −.
