Abstract

Affirming care for aging transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people has dramatically increased across the last 15 years. Even with this consistent progress, there remains a critical lack of comprehensive research and access to safe and affirming services. For providers and care teams who care for TGNC older adults, this chapter will explore concepts that are critical to understanding the experience of TGNC people, useful terminology, and culturally sensitive skills for care provision. Readers will begin a process of personal introspection and knowledge acquisition and develop a framework for intentional affirming communication with older TGNC people. The chapter examines generational assumptions particular to TGNC older adults that place them at greater risk for health inequities and poorer quality of life. The ultimate aim is development of multifaceted interdisciplinary care that supports and affirms aging TGNC adults and amplifies their voices within existing systems of care.
