Abstract

Feminist theory has provided us with the insight that gender is both a structural component of society and a way of knowing. Gender, sexuality, the human body, and individuals' experience of them are given meaning by the symbolic and cannot in any way be understood as natural, unmediated by culture. “Clearly, no social reality exists for a given society outside of its particular sex-gender system.”
