Abstract

This paper contains a case study of the escape factor for a source decaying radiatively. The calculation (by Holstein, Phelps and others) of the escape factor g for decay in the lowest eigenmode is reviewed, for sources of both low and high opacity. The comparison of theory with experiment is discussed. The application of g when deducing the spontaneous transition probability is examined, with particular reference to certain experiments of Klose which have here been reanalysed.
