Abstract
The Vesuvius volcano is a complex system that shows fractal and turbulent behaviours on short time-scales. To capture the intrinsic non-linear dynamic processes of the volcano on longer time-scales, a hybrid system consisting of an Artificial Neural Network and an Evolutionary Algorithm was applied to the well-documented eruptive activity occurring from 1631 onward. An important result of such an investigation is that the next volcanic activity is very unlikely to occur before 2020.
