Abstract

Before discussing the media in Australia, I would like to comment briefly on the use of the term ‘Bicentennial celebrations’ which appeared in some of the conference literature. I believe that every word written and uttered has value, even those words ‘half-meant’ or mentioned in passing; and to me, the notion of celebrating the bloody dispossession of a people by the builders of empire, ought not to be acceptable in civilised company. For regardless of tallships sponsored by Coca Cola and endless visits by bemused English royalty and self displays by colonial politicians, 1988 surely has only one message: that until we give back to the First Australians their nationhood, those of us who came later can never claim our own.
