Abstract
Since 1979 a project about the automatic understanding of normally spoken German sentences has been running at Erlangen /1-4/. The evolved speech understanding system should be able to speaker-independently process signals of telephone bandwidth quality. It should not be a one-purpose solution but an experimental tool to aid the development of optimized and specialized future speech understanders for many applications. This requires the ability of modular and easy exchange of its vocabulary, grammar and task specific knowledge. The vocabulary should at least include 1000 wordforms and the language accepted be as natural as possible.
