Abstract

Dirac’s method of quantization is used to give a simple, intuitive demonstration of the equivalence of the physical Hilbert spaces of the chiral Schwinger model and the same model with a Wess-Zumino term added in order to restore gauge invariance. The zero modes of the fields are properly treated in the general compact case, and the interplay of the first and second class constraints of the model is stressed.
