Abstract The observations of Hess (1953) on the variation in atmospheric absorptions over the disk of Jupiter lead to the view that the equatorial clouds are cumuliform, the tops reaching some 2( 30 km above the main cloud deck On this hypothesis, the observations are consistent with a temperature at the level of the main deck considerably in excess of 170 K.
