Abstract

The influence of equation of state on the optimum upper bound to the mass of nonrotating neutron stars is studied under the assumptions that the matter is a perfect fluid satisfying rho> or =0, p> or =0,dp/dp> or =0, and that below a density rho/sub 0/ the equation of state is known while above this density it is otherwise unrestricted. The effects of varying both rho/sub 0/ and the equation of state below this density are investigated.
