Abstract

Crystals of Cr(CO) 6 containing dissolved Os(CO) 5 are paramagnetic at 100 K after γ irradiation. The substitutional paramagnetic impurity is Os(CO) 5 +, in which the unpaired electron occupies an osmium 5 d z 2 orbital. The z direction is parallel to one of the two types of Cr-C bonds in the crystal, leading to two distinct trapping sites (A and B) for the impurity.
