Abstract

The presence of argon gas in the vacuum chamber during deposition was found to yield epitaxial gold films, of extremely low defect content, on both vacuum-and air-cleaved rocksalt surfaces. The influence of the argon involves the formation of remarkably well oriented and faceted gold nuclei in the earliest observable stages of growth. The results are thought to be of commercial importance.
