Abstract

Recent analyses of 1044 consecutive perinatal autopsies at a New York city hospital prove the value of good autopsies in understanding the mechanisms of perinatal death. Use of the autopsy instead of the death certificate for epidemiologic investigations offers the possibility of providing new and useful data about common perinatal disorders. Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage, hyaline membrane disease, and hydramnios and oligohydramnios are among the disorders investigated and discussed from the epidemiologic standpoint.
