Abstract
This article discusses the magnitude of the problem of corrosion in our water distribution systems. This corrosion epidemic is driving up utility operating, maintenance, and capital costs while also degrading water quality and jeopardizing the public health. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) recognizes deterioration of the quality of water in our distribution systems as an important public health concern. The article discusses the difference between uniform corrosion and localized corrosion, identifies many types of localized corrosion, and provides prevention methods for each type. Discussion and data is provided for emergency recommendations, life expectancy of pipes, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's corrosion standards.
