Abstract

Durban has several established beach sport events. One of the many events is the Mr Price Pro, an internationally recognised surfi ng event, which takes place during the Vodacom Beach Africa festival, held annually during the July holiday season. This article examines the environmental impact of beach tourism events by drawing on primary research conducted during the Mr Price Pro surfi ng event. One of the aspects that will be underscored is the potential that beach sport tourism events have for environmental (especially marine) education. Also, the importance of ‘greening’ sport events is emphasised.
