Abstract

As living standards improve both Government and individuals demand an improvement in the environment. This has led to concerns that were not previously treated with the same urgency such as fuel used for energy generation and the disposal of industrial and community wastes. In many countries with readily available fossil fuel resources, man's perception of «waste» disposal is dominated by existing, inefficient and environmentally unfriendly plant. In countries where fossil fuels have not been readily available, and whose livelihood depends to a great extent on a clean environment i.e. Nordic countries with a strong forest-based industry, energy generation technologies have been and are continuing to be developed which are acceptable to the community and extensively use renewable energy in various combinations
