Abstract

AbstractIncreasing environmental awareness on the part of society as a whole has, in recent years, led to increased scrutiny of the impact of industrial and commercial activities upon the environment. Arising from the general feeling that it is ‘right’ to conserve, re‐use and recycle resources, the concept of environmental management has come increasingly to the fore. The relatively recent successes achieved during well‐known waste minimization projects such as Aire and Calder and Project Catalyst have increased the fervour with which such a management approach has been lauded, because for the first time it has become clear that ‘the environment’ does not have to be a costly ‘bolt on’ extra, but can lead to genuine financial savings and efficiency improvements. But is environmental management the cure for all ills, or is it simply part of an overall picture that needs to be set in the right context?
