Abstract
AbstractTo offer a firm philological ground on which future philosophical interpretations can be built, this paper examines the genesis of On the Uses and Disadvantage of History for Life from the time of its earliest inception, through Nietzsche’s notes and draft s, and through the proofing and publication stages. By reconstructing the ‘Entstehung’ of the second Untimely Meditation out of the texts and manuscripts of the Weimar archives, this article will demonstrate several misrepresentations in the KSA and KGW as well as some peculiarities in the published text that have long occluded philosophical interpretation.
