Abstract

Summary The entropy of formation of the mercury-aqueous solution interface has been calculated from double layer and interfacial tension measurements. The entropy was found to pass through a maximum value at a cathodic polarization, indicating a natural orientation at the point of zero charge of the water molecules with the oxygen atom pointing towards the metal. The influence of specific adsorption on the entropy is qualitatively discussed.
