Abstract

In this experiment a new technique to improve the charge resolution of Lexan-polycarbonate plastic has been used. Applying ultraviolet irradiation we got an increase of the charge resolution by a factor of three. The method and the technical equipment are described in detail. For an individual iron particle a resolution of 0.1 charge units has been achieved. Data from measurements on the composition of cosmic rays with Z⩾8 and energies between 150–400 MeV/nucl. are presented. The analysis is based on the measurement of 193 heavy particles stopping in a stack of 18 Lexan sheets, which was flown at an altitude of 1.8 g/cm 2 for 10 h from Fort Churchill. In 500 cm 2 of this detector package we have obtained the estimation (0.13±0.6)⩽Mn/Fe⩽(0.25±0.09) at the point of measurement.
