Abstract

in 1958 the English Folk Dance and Song Society is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of its older half the Folk Song Society, which was founded in June 1898. Of those who brought the movement to birth no one now remains in the Society, and few names on the first list of Members are those of people whom today we would associate with folk music their distinction lies in other fields, Elgar, Grieg, Parry, Stanford, the great violinist Joachim, Mrs. Lawrence (later Lady) Gomme these are some of the names we find on the first Committee.
