Abstract
The paper deals with an investigation of the energy of the struck string studied by observation of the energy lost by the hammer during the impact. A systematic investigation was made of the influence of the position of the impact along the string and of the relative mass of hammer and string. For each value of the mass of the hammer a sharply defined position of impact was found at which maximum energy loss by the hammer occurs and the necessary conditions were studied in detail. In the summary of results given at the end of the paper references are given to the figures in the text in which the results are shown graphically.
