Abstract

Introduction: It has become increasingly recognized that atherosclerosis as well as the vascular injury response are the consequences of inflammatory derangements within the vascular wall. Vascular wall inflammation is especially pronounced in Type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition that is associated with exaggerated vascular disease. The etiology of this inflammation, however, is poorly understood and has been debated. There is evidence that vascular inflammation may occur in response to infectious agents but recent findings suggest a sterile etiology arising from the activation of innate immunity.
