Abstract

The dominant culture of the West as well as movements opposing it are increasingly absorbed by the consciousness-obliterating dynamism of technology. Because the projects of postmodernist art magnify the images and artefacts produced in the course of modernization, they explicate the thrust of technicism and disclose the inordinate discipline required not to change the prevailing technological momentum but to remain conscious of it. Their fatalistic diagnosis of modernity and their consequent unconstrained irony are so unbearable that academic interpreters of modernization implicitly renounce the manoeuvres of postmodernist projects even as they deign to appreciate them.
