Abstract

The article recalls the origins of the problem of the bananas trade war between the EU, several Latin-American countries and the US. It describes in a nutshell the numerous attempts to find a solution to this trade conflict through the WTO-Dispute Settlement Mechanism. It then analyses the legal, economic, political and procedural aspects of the negotiations from the 'Good Offices' Process in the WTO to the final negotiations of the Geneva Agreement on Trade in Bananas (GATB). Finally the article assesses the possible benefits of the GATB for the main parties involved in the GATB.
