Abstract

There is probably no more difficult decision in a clinician's professional life than to declare a patient dead. Clinicians are trained to make diagnoses and to make decisions on the basis of those diagnoses. But is the declaration that a patient is dead a professional diagnosis? John Finch presents the view that deciding on death is just that: a decision.
