The Employment Characteristics of the Graduates of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

Abstract

This study focused on the profile of the graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Bulacan State University from 2013 – 2016. Descriptive survey methods were used to determine the characteristics of graduates in the said Program. The study also aimed to identify the skills most needed in the employment of the graduates and to analyze the usefulness of the course offerings of the college in the employment of its graduates. With the use of standardized questionnaire, data were collected and analyzed with the use of simple statistical tools such as percentage, weighted mean and ranking. The findings revealed that the graduates of BS in Mathematics with specialization in computer science, applied statistics and business applications are highly employable with 90.58 percent employment rating, with regular status and presently working locally connected to marketing, business, IT and communications industries. About 81.72 percent of the graduates have been employed within less than a month to 6 months after graduation. Their college degree was found related to their employment. Communication skills and information technology skills were skills learned in their college that the graduates mostly needed during employment. The specialization courses (computer science, applied statistics, business applications) and the student internship program were found to be extremely useful in the graduates’ employment.
