Abstract

Religion is a complex, many-sided phenomenon. Dealing first with its structure, G. V. Plekhanov observed that "religion may be defined as a more or less integral system of concepts, moods and acts. The concepts form the mythological component of religion; moods fall into the category of religious feelings, and acts into the area of religious observances or, in other words, worship" (G. V. Plekhanov, On Religion and the Church [O religii i tserkvi], Moscow, 1957, p. 251). Further, Plekhanov emphasized that religious moods are rooted in feelings and aspirations developing out of the soil of particular societal relationships, and changing along with them.
