Abstract

Recent research suggests that the emergency department (ED) is increasingly becoming an entry point to the child mental health system of care. Some caregivers may present to the ED with their children because of an urgent psychiatric crisis or for routine mental health care since they lack a medical home. However, this practice setting is often disconnected from community-based mental health services and it may be unclear to ED providers what role they may play in the identification of mental health issues.
