Abstract

The main purpose of this chapter is to present and analyze the profile of a group of increasing importance within the Brazilian labor market, the self-employed workers. These workers have always been present in the Brazilian economy. However, due to the combination of four factors (the economic crisis; the Labor Reform; the liberal profile of the Bolsonaro government; and the Revolution 4.0), they recently became part of a structural change in the labor market. Such a change is here observed through data from the main national survey on employment and unemployment in Brazil. This chapter deals with the determinants of this structural change as well as how it happened. It also discusses implications for foreign firms that want to operate in Brazil.
