Abstract

The electronic structure and binding energy of 5d transition atoms on W(100) have been calculated selfconsistently utilizing a surface molecule concept. The theoretical results are compared with experiment. It is concluded that adsorption is predominantly neutral and that the experimental binding energy trend cannot be understood solely in terms of the adatom electronic configuration.
