Abstract

The possibility of a magnetic field induced phase transition of an electron gas into an ordered state with spatial modulation of charge density or spin density has been disucced by several authors.1–4 For a semi-metallic Syatem, it has been Suggested that a high magnetic field may cause the long-suspected excitonic phase transition.5,6 We have recently found an anomaly in the magneto-transport of graphite in the quantum limit,7–9 which appears to have a close connection with these types of electronic phase transitions.
