Abstract

The calcinations of an yttrium-O-phenylene-O–ytterbium-O-phenylene-O hybrid copolymer under an argon atmosphere gave the composite material of nano-sized yttrium oxide and ytterbium oxide in the matrix of carbon clusters. The material was found to show a visible-light responsive oxidation–reduction function, possibly through an electron transfer in the process of ytterbium oxide → carbon clusters → yttrium oxide → carbon clusters.
