Abstract

The optical absorption of layer compounds is considered in the limit of tight binding between the planes perpendicular to the c-axis and using the effective mass approximation. The relevant excitons in the planes have wave functions like those of a two dimensional hydrogen atom. The resulting form of the optical absorption curve is compared with experiments, but the agreement with the simple theory is not very satisfactory.
