Abstract

The reported measurements show that AlF3 is a suitable host lattice for the study of trivalent iron group ions. Single crystals suitable for electron paramagnetic resonance measurements can be grown from the vapour phase. The hyperfine interaction of the fluorine nuclei with the Cr3+ ion has been investigated by the ENDOR technique, the values of As and Ap being determined as -10.08±0.05 MHz and -9.24±0.07 MHz respectively. These measurements show that the impurity ion is in the symmetrical position in the fluorine octahedron, unlike Al3+ which is not in the centre of this octahedron.
