Abstract

Single crystal ruthenium specimens of nominally one-half cm diameter and up to eight cm long have been prepared by electron beam zone melting in a vacuum of about 1 × 10 −6 torr. Purity profiles obtained by measuring RRR (the ratio of the electrical resistance at room temperature to that at 4.2°K) are shown for crystals grown from both 99.9% pure and 99.999% pure starting material. With the more pure substance a crystal with an RRR value of 1100 has been obtained.
