Abstract

The electrocardiogram has been studied in 45 cases of diffuse interstitial disease of the lungs, 21 with asbestosis and 24 with chronic diffuse interstitial fibrosis of unknown etiology. Seven patients had electrocardiographic evidence of right ventricular hypertrophy; three P pulmonale alone; and one both. The presence of these changes was related to the diffusing capacity since the majority occurred in patients in whom the D co was less than 40 per cent of normal. The P wave axis was usually normal. This finding is in contrast to the findings in chronic bronchitis with obstruction of airways in which the P wave axis is often +80 ° or more. It is suggested that the increase in residual volume of the lungs in the latter condition may account for this difference.
